Good substrates do not have to choose between drainage and moisture retention. Fibrous materials can hold water on and within their structure while leaving irregular spaces that contribute to aeration.
Why structure matters over time
A substrate that collapses and compacts can behave differently months after repotting than it did on day one. Tree fern fiber is often used as one structural component in blends designed to remain relatively open.
It works best as part of a system
We combine ingredients for different jobs. Bark and coco chips provide coarse structure, perlite increases porosity, charcoal contributes another durable particle, and worm castings provide an organic nutrient-rich component. Tree fern fiber complements those materials rather than replacing all of them.
