05 Hoya Mix
BETTER ROOTS. BETTER PLANTS.
Hendo Hoya Mix is an airy, well-draining potting blend formulated for Hoyas. Small orchid bark, washed and Cal-Mag-buffered coco chips, perlite, tree fern fiber and worm castings combine into a textured mix that drains freely while holding some moisture between waterings. Use it straight from the bag for potting and repotting your Hoyas.
Why an airy mix works
Many Hoyas grow as epiphytes, with their roots attached to trees rather than buried in dense ground soil. Their roots need both moisture and oxygen. Bark, coco chips and perlite create spaces in the mix that let excess water drain and air reach the root zone. Smaller pieces help the mix settle around finer roots, while tree fern fiber holds some moisture without making the blend entirely fine-textured.
What's inside and what each ingredient does
- Small orchid bark: creates air spaces and adds a durable, textured structure around roots.
- Washed and Cal-Mag-buffered coco chips: hold some moisture and add fibrous structure. Washing removes excess salts, and buffering prepares the coco before blending.
- Perlite: a lightweight, porous material that helps keep the mix open and improves aeration and drainage.
- Tree fern fiber: adds a fibrous texture that roots can grow through and retains some moisture between waterings.
- Worm castings: a small amount of organic material blended throughout the mix.
Best for
Hoyas grown in pots with drainage holes. Adjust watering to your variety and growing conditions; thinner-leaved Hoyas may need more consistent moisture than thick-leaved varieties.

How to use
- Choose a pot with drainage holes that comfortably fits the root system without excessive extra space.
- Gently remove loose old potting mix, taking care to protect healthy roots.
- Position your Hoya and fill around the roots. Tap the pot lightly to settle the mix; avoid packing it tightly.
- Water thoroughly and let excess water drain away.
Check the mix and pot weight before watering again instead of following a fixed schedule. Let the mix approach dry, adjusting for your Hoya variety, light, temperature, humidity and pot size. Never leave the pot standing in drained water.

How much mix do I need?
The amount depends on the pot's internal volume and the space occupied by the roots. Measure the space you need to fill and choose a 4 QT or 8 QT bag accordingly.
